You know your BMI, then what else should you factor in?

measurementRemember that abdominal obesity (excessive fat tissue in and around the abdomen) is another predictor for developing risk factors for heart disease, diabetes, stroke, certain forms of cancer and other medical conditions.

In men, this risk increases with a waist measurement of more than 40 inches while in women, this is increased with a waist measurement of more than 35 inches.

The table below will give you an idea of your risks for developing diseases or conditions associated with obesity when you combine your BMI results with your waist circumference.

Risks of Obesity-Associated Diseases by BMI and Waist Circumference*:

Classification of Overweight and Obesity by BMI, Waist Circumference, and Associated Disease Risks
Disease Risk* Relative to Normal Weight and Waist Circumference

Classification of Overweight and Obesity

* Disease risk for type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and CVD.
+ Increased waist circumference can also be a marker for increased risk even in persons of normal weight.
